Season 2 Memoirs (o)f Death, chapter: Ring (1991)
His death should have been a fresh wound, particularly with so many reminders at hand. It would have been if Penelope not chosen to use the Book. She had summoned the one being who could erase the memories of that person she had cared so much about. It was the only way to keep going. It was the only way to continue her life and live for her baby, unburdened by the decisions and events she’d witnessed.
When she finally arrived home, Penelope handed the babysitter a bigger tip than usual. The young girl could immediately tell Penelope wasn’t the same. It felt like a completely different person had come back through the door than had left her with the baby earlier that night. But the tip was good; why spoil the moment with some untoward comment?
The baby was sleeping safely in the crib. Penelope eased the door shut again, then hurried to the kitchen table when the phone rang. She needed to return the Book back to its home in the safe. She had halfway been tempted to toss it off a bridge into the river on her way back. It would have been a final goodbye to the scars of the past, even though they no longer hurt as much. But she knew other horrors lay inside. It wouldn’t be wise to risk anyone reading those lines ever again.
Locking the Book away was the least she could for this world she was living in, a small service to keep others safe. But when she returned to the kitchen the Book wasn’t there anymore. The spot on the table where she had left it sat empty.
