The prefix Octa means 8 in Greek**.** Hence the **Octal Number System (**base 8) comprises 8 numbers [ 0,1,2.... 7 ].

Though computers store numbers in binary (0 & 1),  it is hard and error prone for us to write in this format.  The Octal number system makes it easier for us to write and communicate a number in octal form.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to perform octal addition and subtraction.
