The prefix Hexa means 6 while Decimal means 10. Hence, the Hexadecimal system (base 16) represented by 16 numbers using 10 digits[0-9] and 6 characters [A-F].

The Hexademical System is useful  for computer programmers to write a binary number in a more easily understandable form. It is also commonly used to represent colours in HTML codes, for example, #FF6600.

Lesson 3 of 4: What have I learnt?

Hexadecimal Number System

It is important to note the use of letters in this number system. A = 10, B = 11, C = 12, D = 13, E = 14 and F = 15.

For example, A2316 = 10 x 162 + 2 x 161 + 3 x 160 = 2560 + 32 + 3 = 2595

The addition and subtraction of Hexadecimal numbers are similar to those of binary and decimal numbers.
