By the end of this lesson, you will be able to

  1. explain what are matrices
  2. identify the different types of matrices

Lesson 1 of 4: What is a Matrix?

Let's start by watching the trailer of the science fiction movie The Matrix.

The Matrix in the movie refers a simulated reality created by machines to take over the human race. So what has The Matrix have to do with our lesson on Matrices?

Well, the movie relies heavily on computer graphics to animate many of the seemingly impossible images and scenes. To create these effects, the data is stored in rectangular array of numbers from which complex mathematical operations are performed.

The rectangular array of numbers are called matrices, our topic for this lesson.

So what is a matrix?

In mathematics, a matrix is just an rectangular array of numbers. Represented on the left is an array A with pairs of m  x n numbers where m is the number of rows and n is the number of columns. Click on the video below to find out more.
