We are starting on our topic in Relations with some introductory concepts in Relations.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explain the concept of cartesian product, ordered pairs, arrow diagrams and binary relation.

Estimated duration: 30 minutes

Lesson 1 of 4: Introduction to Relations

Before we start our lesson, relations are all around us : boy friend & girl friend relations and parent-child relations.

Did you know that relations can be quite complex under the sea too ?

Sea anemones paralyze small fishes for food.  However, you can see small fishes like the clown fishes swimming happily among the sea anemones without any fear of being paralyze.

Is there a special RELATION between the clown fishes and the sea anemones ?  Are they not afraid of being paralyze and eaten up ? WHY ?

Interesting, right ?

Now, let's get to our introduction to Relations by watching this video.

This video starts off with Relations first and subsequently moved on to teach about domain, range and co-domain which are topics we will be covering under Functions after this topic on Relations.  So don't get worried when you see the text, "domain, range and co-domain".  We will learn them later.

Thus for NOW, we will only watch the first part of this video which give detailed insights into cartesian product, ordered pairs, arrow diagrams and binary relation.
