S1B1: MYTHS

From the Memoirs of Dea(t)h, chapter: Myths

Every human being dies at least three times in their life.

Their first time is when they are born, when the secure life inside their mother’s belly is over. Humans are not aware of that first death. It only really becomes apparent when the final death comes.

Penelope Sky was standing alone under a street lamp when I met her on that night in 1992. The air smelled bad. The alley where I found her was not the greatest place for a meetings. She was wearing a red dress and high heels. Her pretty face was hiding behind make up which was smeared from crying. She knew I would come. In the end she was the one who called me. Throughout history, many humans have managed to perform the ritual to summon me. And I always come for these invitations even it is not their time yet.

She looked me in the skull. She didn't moved an inch. Those eyes were already dead. I knew why I was here, she didn't even need to speak to me. I have seen this scenario so many times through the centuries. She smiled and mumbled "Thank you!" just before I raised my scythe and took a swing at her.

Penelope Sky was standing alone under a street lamp oblivious of what just happened. She couldn't see me anymore. She didn't remember what she was doing there. She turned and walked away, free of the pain that just a few minutes before was growing quickly inside of her.

I told you every human being dies at least three times in their life. Their second death is when their love for someone is lost. It is not a physical death. But in the process part of your soul falls away and nothing will be the same after that. Now you know one of my additional jobs: I relieve humans of the pain caused by love. When love causes undesired pain, the type of pain even stronger and more intense than any sickness, I may come with relief. If the one you deeply love is not feeling the same towards you, I may take that pain away.

To be honest, I remove a lot of pain, misery and depression during the time spent with all of you in all my jobs.
