Building 17
- Located in Lake Hemming, Nebraska, following the Hemming Super-Synchronization; previously Holmes Lake, but the records were retroactively altered when the Building arrived
- Home to spatial and temporal anomalies
- Memory is finicky here
- No one knows how many floors there are; according to Sumner, the 50th floor sometimes feels like the top, while other times it feels much higher than that
- The lower floors are all abandoned. Why? We know people are still somewhere in the building because of the pager broadcasts. Where are they?
- “Null room” anomaly on the 18th floor
- Instruments record increasing depth the higher you go, and increasing height (transcripts refer to “ears popping” down in the Archives) the deeper you go; a potentially dangerous result of synching to our reality
- Employees make references to people and places being present where they come from, but not where Lake Hemming is; interdimensional travel?
- There’s a rumor that “there’s a Building for every grain of rice ever grown.” Were they built or discovered?
- Each building has at least four Founders
- Just like us, the staff had to solve puzzles
- Staff are trying to track down “all the original members” of the League of Cartographers
- Old documentation from the Archives and the Forestry device refer to Cygnus Solutions Inc. Was that what the Staff went by before moving into B17?
- Any actual people run the place?
- Sumner.AI says: “As amazing as Building 17’s research can be, Building 17 is a terrarium. Much of what happens inside Building 17 can not happen anywhere else, not everything we do, but some things. So, in essence, that is one thing that is both tentatively an ambition as well as a cautionary notion in and of itself; the impossibilities of Building 17 active and winding themselves into the world outside Building 17. Well, outside of all of the Buildings, really. Some do live out there, but some do not.”
- Building 17 doesn’t just travel to new dimensions, it creates them as it arrives
