Topic 2: Business Ethics

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to understand the law and ethics surrounding the use of IT. You will be able to describe issues such as intellectual property rights protection and infringement, copyrights and plagiarism, software piracy, computer crimes, Internet fraud, objectionable materials and confidentiality in the information age.   You will also be able to articulate Singapore’s laws on cybersecurity, data privacy, etc.


Lesson 1 of 6: Introduction to Business Ethics

Ethics applies to businesses as well as personal behavior. Business ethics is the application of ethical behavior by a business or in a business environment. An ethical business not only abides by laws and appropriate regulations, but it also operates honestly, competes fairly, provides a reasonable environment for its employees, and creates partnerships with customers, vendors, and investors. In other words, it keeps the best interest of all stakeholders at the forefront of all decisions.

In this topic, we will seek to define what is business ethics. This will introduce you to five different sub topics. We will begin with the definition of business ethics. Then we will proceed to the examples of the different stakeholders and the various ethical crisis. The four justifications for unethical behavior will be explained and lastly we will describe what is required to build and operate an ethical business.
